In Business it is What You Do Next That Counts!

Anyone can have a level of success, but to truly see your business grow it takes your ability to know who is your best customer and seek that market with a well thought out strategy.

Anyone can have a level of success.  That is why there are so many businesses out there in the first place.  Somewhere in the past a comment as made, “you should sell these!” or “You could open up your own place and make a fortune!”  Sound familiar? 

People drop by sample your favorite hobby and all of a sudden you lay there in bed and think to yourself how amazing it would be to own your future and be a business owner. So you start off and within two years, you are searching for a new job because it didn’t work out.

The biggest thing that separates successful and less than successful business is answering the simple question, “What do I do next?”  Here is one step in answering that question, the answer to which can take your company to the next level.

It requires you to hit the pause button and do some research.  Up until now it has all been about selling and setting up your business.  You have an accountant, you have a product or service that you really care about, you may even have a place from which you can sell.  But you never thought about building the business.

Identify your customer and their motivation.  Go back and look through your records, don’t rely on your memory.  Actually take a look at who bought from you and if you can see a common denominator.  I was visiting with a store owner who sells shoes and discussing this principle.  I simply asked, "Who buys your shoes other than the mom/dad or youth needing work out shoes?"  The answer was people in the food industry, healthcare and others in service.  Basically he was identifying that his sales and potential huge market is those who are on their feet all day.  My follow up question was really simple, "So what are you doing to market to those industries?"

If you know your best client, the answer to what to do next is to go after them.  Find ways to intersect with them and show them you hold the answer to their greatest need.  You can wait for them to “find”, “like” or “link” with you or you can prepare a strategy that will place you at their point of need.
