Are You a Responder, or an Initiator?

All our life we are told what to do. Our parents told us, our teachers told us, then our boss told us what to do. So are you waiting for someone to tell you now?

I meet with business owners everyday to coach them through recognizing inconsistencies, sharing best practices from other successful business people and sometimes just being a cheerleader.  No question that when I meet with them the most common missing element is getting caught in the responding mode and not initiating business.

Waiting for someone to walk through the door, or call the telephone or place an order online, no matter what medium they wait for business.  And wait some more, then when it doesn't happen, the blame goes on the economy.  Using "the economy" as an excuse is like an NFL quarterback.  They get too much credit and too much blame.

So what do you do to drive business?  That is clearly my mantra to each and every business owner I meet and the most common response is "word of mouth."  Which is a good thing if you have a big enough mouth.

The first thing you could do to help your business whether it is a new venture or long time firm, is to take time out to think about your company, its product or service and ask your self how it is going?  Where are we going?  What are we doing and is it effective?  Then pull out a calendar and mark out a plan and direction with goals.  This whole process is best done with another person.  Of course people hire me to do this with them, but if you link up with another business owner you trust and hold each other accountable, you will make powerful progress.

When was the last time you had a strategic plan?  That separates the responders from the initiators.
