Are We Asking the Right Questions?

Do your beliefs match your actions? Or do you just get upset with what you hear and not really live what you feel? The school shooting has polarized many groups but are we asking the right question?

So everyone has written something about the gun violence by now.  I chose to give it a bit of a rest before sharing something.  And it might surprise you that with all the debate, what I hear people say seems to focus on the wrong questions.  Not that it is a surprise.  As a personal and business coach, I find it quite common for individuals to miss the point.  There is a part in each of us for self preservation that will protect us and our views at the cost of true open minded dialog.

When I hear a statement like, what are our lawmakers going to do?  Or how will the nation respond?  Or closer to home, I wonder what law enforcement and the NRA will do?  We are not asking the right question.  And because of that no progress is done.  Are you ready for the right question?

The right question is, how do I feel and what will I do?  Did you notice the subtle difference as the responsibility is shifted?  It isn't always about others or waiting for people to express themselves.  It should be a matter of consciousness.  Aware that the only thing that can be done for sure, is what I choose to do.  Own it, move beyond the waiting game and ask how can you get involved in the solution.  It may mean how you personally interact with firearms.  It may mean you make a phone call to the office of your elected official or write a blog and post it.  It may mean you study more about the issue and get the facts, usually missing in all of these debates.

The point of this blog is not to take a side in the debate, it is to challenge you to do something that fits your belief.  Go for it and express yourself.

When you are considering how next year will be, consider how you will be in the new year.  Will it be a year of living what you believe?  Hit the pause button and ask yourself the question.  In my book, Pause: Lessons about how to get what YOU want out of life, I challenge the reader to take a closer look at their beliefs and see if they match up with their actions.  Now is the time to decide.
