Reader Seeks Help in Identifying Birds

A Yorkville High School student is hoping someone with knowledge of local birds can identify the species she captured on film.

A Yorkville High School student snapped this photo of a flock of birds early Tuesday morning.

"I've never seen so many birds in my life," the teen said after snapping the photo.

The trouble for Lucy B. is, she doesn't know what kind of birds these are. She's appealing to Patch readers in hopes someone can help her identify the type of bird, which she said makes a "high-pitched" sound. Any are ornitholgists are asked to help the teen identify these birds.

They look like Starlings - they tend to start flocking now.

Dear Lucy, Great nature spotting! In the fall, groups of blackbirds, such as grackles, starlings, cowbirds, and red winged blackbirds, gather in large groups called flocks. These flocks can be larger than one million birds at a time. Throughout the fall, blackbird flocks travel southward together in search of food and a common resting place. They will make a return flight in the spring. Here in Yorkville, I, too, have noticed several large (and noisy!) waves of blackbirds migrating through recently. Keep up your outdoor explorations! Not directly related, but I've been using an iPhone app called ChirpUSA that has been helpful in identifying birds by sound.

There have been several flocks of cedar waxwings flying through Yorkville and Oswego the past few days. We saw a flock along the Fox River yesterday.
