Yorkville Public Library Receives Funding from Friends of the Library for Reading Programs and More

The Yorkville Library has been unable to purchase as many new books for its collection in the past few years and encourages donations for the purchase of books.

The following was provided by the Friends of the Yorkvile Public Library:

The Friends of the Yorkville Public Library are proud to be able to fund several programs for the Yorkville Library.

Money was given for adults’ and children’s reading programs, children’s award books, and general book purchases. This contribution also funded the adult winter reading program, “Reading is Snow Much Fun” that had over 100 participants.

In addition to these programs, money was previously given for the Library’s subscription to the “Wall Street Journal” and welcome packets for new patrons.

“The Friends make it possible for our Library to have some wonderful programs for children and adults and add many new books to the collection,” stated Michelle Pfister, Library Director.

In addition to contributing to the cost of Library programs and services, members of the Friends volunteer throughout the Library, from washing books and shelves to planting and weeding flower beds.

The annual Used Book Sale during Hometown Days is the primary fund-raising activity for the Friends. The used books sold come from donations by the community, and the two-day event draws hundreds of people.  Kathy Kelso, Treasurer of the Friends, summed it up for the group: “It’s an honor to be able to help the Library. We wish we could do more.”

With the decline in development funds over the past few years, the Library has been unable to purchase many new books for its collection. People are encouraged to donate books or money in honor of loved ones, and groups are asked to consider donations for the purchase of books. All donations are acknowledged with a book plate in the front of books with the name of the donor or person being memorialized.

Donations of money for books is preferred so the Library is able to purchase based on need and so that multiple copies of books are not received. Please contact Michelle Pfister at the Library if you have questions.
