Ritchie the Rooster Will Have New Home in Yorkville

A rooster found wandering in Evanston will be moved to a permanent home in Yorkville on Saturday.

A rooster found last week will move Saturday to a Yorkville farm after efforts to find his owners failed.

Dubbed "Ritchie the 8th Ward Rooster," the bird stayed a few days with Susan and Greg Allen in Evanston while the family and authorities tried to decide what to do with him. He had a makeshift nest in their backyard.

He technically was a fowl foul with the law: Hens , when City Council passed an ordinance allowing people to own 2-6 of them, but roosters were specifically banned under that same ordinance.

Both the Evanston police department and animal control told the family they do not handle rooster cases. With the help of Evanston 8th Ward Alderman Ann Rainey, the family connected with city animal warden David Rose, and promised the bird would not become anyone's dinner or be harmed in any way.

Earlier this week, the Ritchie will go to a 10-acre Yorkville farm with other rescue chickens and ducks.
