Moms Talk: Summer Jobs For Teens?

In this economy, how important is it for high schoolers to work during the summer?

My very first job was a newspaper route that helped pay for horseback riding lessons. I had a short (very short) stint babysitting and then answered phones at the local weekly paper in high school.

I got the impression my parents thought having a job as a teenager was an important way for their kids to learn responsibility.

What do you think? When is a teen old enough to have a job? In this economy, are jobs for teens too hard to come by? How do you find job opportunities for teenagers?
