The production will be presented at 7:00 p.m. November 15, 16, 22 and 23 and at 2:00 p.m. November 17 and 23.

The show, which has been a perennial hit since it first opened in 1964, has enjoyed critical acclaim for bringing to the stage a poignant story about the enduring bonds of family. Now, this local production brings the wit and wisdom of Tevye, the humble milkman, and his family to Sandwich, IL.

Early in the show, set in a village in pre-revolutionary Russia, Tevye announces: “Without our traditions, our lives would be as shaky as a Fiddler on the Roof.”

The Fiddler, and integral part of the story line, is portrayed by 12-year old Sophie Kennedy. Kennedy began playing violin at age 3 with Stan Smith of Aurora Suzuki Violins as her teacher. She now studies with Mrs. Ann Montzka-Smelser at the NIU Suzuki Program.

“I love playing the violin,” she said. “Its become a part of my every day life.”

Kennedy is also a member of the Community School of the Arts Symphonette String Orchestra conducted by Linc Smelser, and lives in Somonauk.

“When Sophie attended our open casting call and entered the room with violin in hand, I knew we were in for a treat,” said Susan Webb, music director for the production. “She takes such care in the way she creates music on her instrument and is meticulous in how it is presented.”

Audiences will see Kennedy’s portrayal of the Fiddler, not only at the on-set of the production, but throughout the show at various times, and in a pre-show recital on stage.

Tevye's wrestling with the new customs of a younger generation is punctuated by an unforgettable score that weaves the haunting strains of Sunrise, Sunset with the rousing If I Were a Rich Man and the exuberant Matchmaker, Matchmaker.
