DESCRIPTION:Yellow House Artists\, an organization of artists who work in
Oil Pastel and/or Oil Stick\, present their Spring Show\, &ldquo\;Sprin
g Into Art&rdquo\; at the Geneva History Center\, 113 South Third Street
 \, Geneva\, Illinois\, from May 4 &ndash\; May 5\, 2012.\nThe Opening Re
ception is Friday\, May 4 from 5:00 &ndash\; 9:00 PM during the First Fr
iday Gallery Walk in downtown Geneva. The gallery hours are Friday\, 5:0
 0 &ndash\; 9:00\; Saturday\, 11:00 &ndash\; 4:00. This show will feature
original paintings by 23 artists. Art will be for exhibit and sale.\nYe
llow House Artists is a group of oil pastel artists who promote both the
ir art and the medium. The group originated with 17 oil pastel artists w
ho had a gallery in a yellow house during the 2007 St. Charles Fine Art
Show. The group has since grown to include 47 members who are interested
in creating and showing their work as well as informing the public abou
t the qualities of this little known medium.\nThese artists have been pa
inting together at the Fine Line Creative Arts Center in St. Charles and
/or the DuPage Art League in Wheaton with artist/teachers\, George Shipp
erley\, Carol Zack\, and George Bruce. Members of the Yellow House Artis
ts use unique techniques developed by their instructors\, taking advanta
ge of the special qualities of the medium.\nOil pastels were developed i
n the 1940&rsquo\;s at the request of Pablo Picasso. He wanted a medium
with the qualities of oil but with ease of application and portability.
Pure pigment is suspended in inert mineral oil\, formed into sticks with
a color palette much like oil paint. To the casual viewer the appearanc
e of the round or square sticks may belie the serious artistic applicati
on of this medium. Colors can be layered and blended\, smeared or smudge
d\, using fingers\, some type of tool\, or left as applied\, all at the
artist&rsquo\;s discretion. The works are generally framed under glass t
o protect the surface image.\nMore information about the group and the m
edium can be found on their web site: www.yellowhouseartists.com.
