Welcome back, Patch Blogger!

What's Your Favorite Local Charity?

We highlight non-profits listed in our "Places" business directory.

One of the cool things about Patch's creative costume contest (besides celebrity judge Heidi Klum) is the potential for a local charity to get a $1,031 donation.

Each parent is asked to name a local charity when he or she uploads a photo of a child aged 12 and younger, so we decided to use this week's You Said It: Rate Local Businesses column to highlight local charities and service organizations.

Kendall County Food Pantry

The food pantry can buy $6 worth of food for every $1 donated, so this might be an excellent choice for contest entries.

Yorkville Junior Women's Club

You may remember the organization's craft show during Hometown Days or their pink flamingos around town, but one of their biggest projects - Operation Santa - helps area needy families have happy holidays.

Aunt Martha's Youth Service Center

"Aunt Martha's Youth Service Center offers a line of programs catered to children, teens and families that need help in the Yorkville and surrounding area. Key areas that Aunt Martha targets are health, education, shelter and counseling," according to its Patch directory listing.

Yorkville American Legion Post 489

On top of being a veterans organization, the American Legion sponsors youth programs, scholarship opportunities and volunteer opportunities.

Yorkville Optimist Club

"This club sponsors and organizes various education and recreational programs throughout the year," according to the directory listing. "This organization aims to nurture a community of civic-minded and empowered future citizens."

Yorkville Lions Club

"The Yorkville Lions Club was founded in 1939," according to its directory listing. "The Yorkville Lions Club provides support for visual, hearing and other assistance as needed by the neighbors within the Yorkville community and beyond."

Side note: Caring Hands Thrift Store is also listed in the Yorkville Patch directory, but store leaders are in the process of moving from the downtown location to a new (presently-being-renovated) location at routes 126 and 47. They're shooting to open the second or third week in November.

Like our business listings, readers can leave comments and ratings on "Places" listings for area charities and local community organizations. To review one, simply make sure you are signed into Yorkville Patch and click on the links above.

About this column: This column points to local businesses listed in the Patch directory.
Of course, Yorkville has more than seven community organizations. What's your favorite local charity? Tell us in the comments.

Celebrate Differences is not in Yorkville but services families of children with disabilities throughout Kendall county. It is a very young organization that has done so much for these families in such a short period of time. Visit their website to learn more - www.celebratedifferences.org.
