Mayor to Council: Should City Run a Preschool Program?

Does city program compete against private entities, mayor asks.

Should the United City of Yorkville be in the preschool business?

This was a question Mayor Gary Golinski asked city council members during the Dec. 11 board meeting. Referencing a referendum on city recreation, Golinski said residents have repeatedly said they do not want to see city government competing against private business and wondered if the city should continue to operate a preschool program.

If the city should not compete with private health clubs and gymnasiums, Golinski said it stands to reason the city should not compete with private preschool operations.

Yorkville Parks and Recreation provides a preschool program, Parker's Playtime Preschool, 202 E. Countryside Parkway Suite D.

"We shouldn't pick and choose when it comes to this," Golinski said.

Private preschool programs inlcude:

Adlerman Carlo Colosimo said he did not know enough of the preschool options in the city to make a decision.

"I'm just throwing this out there for us to think about," Golinski said.

Isn't this a revenue stream for the City and the Parks Department? Where else can they get revenue? The Rec Center appears that it will not be bringing in $ in the future.

One thing we must all think about is whether preschool provides what the name says or if it turns into an expensive social experiment. We wanted to put our oldest in preschool but couldn't afford the $1300 for only 9 months of 1/2 day preschool in addition to paying for daycare on top of it with no option for transportation to or from preschool. When compared to the significantly lower cost of the kids entering kindergarten (which is also paid for in our taxes), having a more budget friendly and comprehensive preschool program may be beneficial to those families who are truly struggling financially but want to be able to put their children in preschool.

The "preschools" listed here are daycare centers that offer preschool curriculum to the kids in full day daycare and charge accordingly. What other options do we have for just a couple of hours a day, part time preschool?

This news saddens me. What has been created so lovingly over the years by dedicated staff is slowly being dismantled. The Recreation Department has grown so much over the years from a catalog with less than 10 pages to one with four or five times that. A great deal of hard work went into building this department into what it is today, and now it will literally be back at scratch. One little building will now house the three remaining staff members, as well as hold all the classes they can squeeze into a day's time. I have sadly learned that politics isn't always fair, and is never magnanimous. Agendas come into play, and the odd-man-out loses. I understand that roads need to be repaired, but we must not compare apples to oranges. Yorkville needs both. Now that they have dwindled the department down to nothing, will the next thing be to wipe out the Rec Dept all together? No, that isn't going to happen. They smartly have kept on some basic staff. If not, who would plan and run Hometown Days, Holidays Under the Stars, and other special events that the politicians can show up to, glad hand, and take the praise for a job well done? Good luck to Tim, Barb, and Shay - if anyone can start to rebuild this skeleton, it is you guys.
