Park District: 10-Year-Old Boy Drowned While Swimming in Jericho Lake

Fox Valley Park District officials said the boy who drowned on Sunday night in Montgomery was swimming with family.

The 10-year-old boy who drowned in Jericho Lake on Sunday was swimming with his family when he went under, Fox Valley Park District officials said Monday.

The boy, whose name has not been released, was at Jericho Lake Park on Montgomery’s west side with his parents, siblings and other relatives around 6 p.m., district officials said. He apparently went swimming with his siblings, who lost sight of him and didn’t know whether he had left the water.

Swimming in Jericho Lake is strictly prohibited, district officials said in a statement on Monday, and signs to that effect are posted prominently.

Firefighters were called to the scene at approximately 6:04 p.m. on Sunday, according to Gary Baum, assistant chief with the Sugar Grove Fire Department. Four divers searched for the boy beneath the surface of the lake, in zero visibility, for about 43 minutes, Baum said, while firefighters in two boats looked for him from above.

The boy was finally found at 6:47 p.m. in 12 feet of water, approximately 25 feet off shore, Baum said. He was taken to Provena Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, where he was pronounced dead, Park District officials said.

Park District police and Sugar Grove firefighters were assisted by fire departments from Aurora and Montgomery and Countryside, and Montgomery and Aurora police.

Jericho Lake is a 20-acre fishing and boating lake owned by the Fox Valley Park District. District police are cooperating with other local authorities in the investigation, according to the written statement.

“The Fox Valley Park District extends its sorrow and deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the victim,” the statement concludes.

Whats the point of saying this? They lost their son. Please keep that in mind before saying things that ultimately wont make a difference and will make them suffer more. This tragedy could have happened to anyone. It is an accident, and a young boy was lost.

No, one said anything bad?? The tragedy could have happen to anyone, however, they are signs posted and it is the adults job to make sure the rules are followed. I have gone to this Park for 30years and they have never allowed swimming. It is very sad to loose a child, but it also could have been prevented. Parents need to follow the rules no matter what park they are at, hopefully this story will help to save another childs life this summer!

Such a heartbreaking loss. My prayers and sympathy to the family of this child.

And a reminder to me...to speak with my kids yet again about never going for a swim in the Fox, or in local subdivision ponds, etc. I tell them every year and hope they remember the danger when they are older and maybe out with friends and mom is not there to watch them.

100% agree. It's a tragedy that a 10 yr old lost his young life. Awful, awful, awful.

We talk to our kids constantly about never swimming anywhere but a pool, and this is a sad reminder of the need to continue to do so. My sympathy to all involved.

I originally posted "There are signs there for a reason, " swimming strictly prohibited" is there for a reason, not just for looks" and I accidentally deleted it-It is a sad story and It angers me as a mother of 3 to hear this, hence my comment that I strongly stand by. I could have been prevented.

This is not an accident and anyone that even remotely thinks or suggests this tragedy is an accident is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. This is a perfect example of negligence on the parents/guardian/responsible adults end. This could have simply been prevented by the attending adults awareness of their surroundings. I weep for the child and their life being cut extremely short, but I am more angered by the stupidity surrounding this tragedy. I am a father of 2 soon to be the father of 3 in Oct and I am ALWAYS AWARE of my childrens wear abouts. This is not the first and unfortunately wont be the last that something like this will happen. I can only pray and hope this wakes up all people that have kids, but I have my doubts. Prove me wrong folks....WAKE UP!!!! This is no ones fault, but the adult that was responsible for this child on the date of the occurrence at the time of the occurrence of this tragedy.

This was absolutely an accident. No doubt, It was a poor decision to let the children in the water. Most of us parents have made a poor decision or 2 and fortunately most of the time those poor decisions don't result in tragedy. It was a large family gathering and lots of adults were present, but it only takes being distracted for a second for bad things to happen. I happened to be at the park that night and witnessed the frantic 911 call and the rescue efforts. If you had heard that mothers gut wrenching cry as they pulled her son from the water, perhaps you would show a little more compassion. I pray that the family can find some sort of peace as they try to move forward with their lives.

Oh, never mind. Its back. I just dont understand the point of adding salt to someones wound. It is a tragedy. The parents and family members are probably dealing with a lot worse then someone who doesnt know them and wasnt there could ever throw at them. As a parent myself, who will probably make a mistake or two, I pray this never happens to another family, and this family finds peace.

Everyone has a right to their say...sad that a child lost his life, but it was the adult's fault, that is certain - you have to watch your kids - always - stuff happens to the most diligent of parents...sad lesson - I just hope, society being what it is, that they don't sue the park district and accept the responsibility of their own negligence...everyone wants to blame the one with the deepest pockets...pay attention people - if you have small children, parks on the water aren't the place to go...nobody is wanting to rub salt on any wounds - time will tell....
