Northern Illinois Food Bank today shipped a donation of a truckload of bleach to Island Harvest Food Bank in Hauppauge, New York to help with the clean-up of Hurricane Sandy.

The donation is being coordinated through Feeding America, of which Northern Illinois Food Bank is a member.

“In times of disasters like Sandy, our commitment to help our neighbors in need has no boundaries,” said Pete Schaefer, president and CEO, Northern Illinois Food Bank. “While we continue to serve our hungry neighbors in northern Illinois, our hearts are also with those whose homes and businesses were devastated by this disaster, and who now face massive clean-up efforts.”

Northern Illinois Food Bank has a long history of providing support for disaster relief across the country. The food bank has provided water, food and cleaning supplies to affected areas after Hurricane Katrina, flooding in Iowa in 2008, Hurricanes Charley, Frances and Jeanne in 2004 in Florida and the Atlantic, and was a first-responder with food and water, as well as staff and equipment after the deadly Plainfield, Ill., tornado in 1990.

Additionally, the food bank sent employees to assist with relief efforts and to help staff sister food banks during the response to each of these natural disasters, and provided staff support at the Food Bank of New York City after 9/11.
